Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa profile

Alhaji sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was born in 1912 in the village of Balewa in bauchi Province, Northern Nigeria. His father is Yakubu.

Abubakar first attended the Tafawa Balewa Elementary School in 1922. He completed his primary school education in 1925. He then proceeded to Bauchi Provincial School and finished in 1928. He later entered Katsina College in the same year and left in 1933. He returned to teach at the Bauchi Middle School where he read privately and passed his Senior Teachers’ Certificate. He later became Headmaster of the School.

In 1945, he was chosen with a group of other Northern Nigerian Leaders, to proceed to the United Kingdom to take a course at the London Institute of Education where he obtained the Ministry of Education Teachers Professional Certificate .he returned to Nigeria in 1946 and took up appointment as educational assistant and later promoted education officer, bauchi province in 1949.



Believing though not in revolution but in gradual politics had already claimed the greater part of his attention .in 1946 he became a member of emirs council in bauchi, and with the inauguration of the Richardson constitution, he s not only became the bauchi provincial representative in the northern member to the central legislative council, ever since then he has taking active part in the politics of Nigeria.

He was a member of the first Northern house of assembly, one of the first groups of central minister and the minister of works 1952; he became the first prime minister of federal republic of Nigeria in September 2, 1957 and again when Nigeria became independent on October 1st 1960 he held the position until he was assassinated in 1966 when the military first made their incursion into the nations polity

He had honors of being the first African to preside over an extraordinary session of the commonwealth heads of government in Lagos January 1966. The meeting discussed the crisis that brought about the Rhodesia unilateral declaration of independence (UDI).


Sir Abubakar is a strongly built man, slim and dark with a face that is good natured on the whole, but shows sign of strong determination and complete absence of any kind of weakness .he is a man with a mission

Sir Abubakar hates injustice and all acts of suppression .he believes that does in authority should regard themselves as the servant of the masses ,protect them from corrupt and petty tyranny and provide the condition that will enable them enjoy their right as free citizen of their country .he pursues his mission with sincerity ,single mindedness and courage

As the first prime minister of the federation, sir Abubakar enjoys the confidence of every Nigerian both in and out of parliament .he is know to be a modest and godly man whose integrity is not doubted the question of sir Abubakar misusing his power arbitrarily in the mind of any Nigerian.
